A beautiful species which categorized under Cichlid family. They grow bigger than normal cichlids. Mother land of this fish is Amazon river. Scientific name is Astronotus ocellatus. In their natural locations their body color helps them to camouflage and protect from predators. In the present market there are genetically modified Oscar types as ornamental fish. There are several hybrid Oscar types around the world. Those are, albino Oscar, red Oscar, wale tail Oscar, red lutino Oscar, etc.


Characters of Oscar
They swim slowly. But if there is a signal of a danger, they can swim very fast and hide. Very active at the time of eating. Oscar is a little bit of aggressive fish. But can keep in a tank with same size fish. Their aggressiveness increase when they not receive food at time. At that time they eat any fish which they can take to mouth.

Breeding tips
If you willing to breed Oscar you have to select them from the small age. Do not purchase fish belong to same origin of mother or relation. Breeding between non related fish will result strong generation with correct colors. Not breeding among relations is a common factor for all kinds of fish breeding. Other thing is you have to buy good colored, strong fish to breed. Fish have to buy at the length of 2-3 inches. Avoid purchasing fish from one location. It is to stop selecting related fish. We can choose set of fish from locally breeding and set of fish from international importers. Inspect fish well before purchase. Avoid purchasing fish with difficulties such as difficult to swim, abnormal formations. Let them to grow in separate tanks. They mature by one year. They trend to fight each other when they get matured sexually. They push each other by their mouths and trend to bite others. Oscar getting separate by couples after sexually matured. They choose their partner as they like but try to couple them from separate generations. Put one couple by one couple to separate tanks.

When they start to get separate they clean tank floor by their mouths. They remove waste particles and clean the surface to build their nest. After getting separate make the environment to lay them eggs. Concern very much on the water. Clean the tank and the floor well. Put a plastic or tile piece in the tank. If the tank aerated reduce the rate of aeration. Specially do not let the air bubbles to hit the put tile or plastic piece.

About 3 days after laying eggs, eggs hatching and juvenile fish come out. But they take some time to swim. To get maximum crop, separate eggs from adults and hatch artificially. Fill the water of the egg laying tank to a basin up to 5-7 inches. Then supply air using a very slow tuned aerator. Add specially formed fungicide to the water of the basin. Then separate the fish couple using a net and take the spawning plate out of the tank and put it in the previously prepared basin with an angle of 45 degrees. Do not let the aeration to hit eggs. Keep the aeration away about 3 inches from the eggs. Do not ever stop aeration. Start feed the juvenile after start swimming.
