Interesting Information about German Shepherd

A German army captain Mr. Max von Stephanitz is the founder of this special kind of dog. In the first German Shepherd is used as a herdsman. Job of the German Shepherd was look after sheep. But according to the intelligence, strong body and the obedient behavior they used for police and army works later. We can identify two categories of German Shepherd which has long hair and short hair. Some people called the long haired German Shepherd as Lion Shepherd. It is not another species but a variety. In the past German Shepherd also called by the name of Alsatian.

German Shepherd is big in body size. They can grow to shoulder height of 22-26 inches. Weight of well grown male is about 30-40kg and female 20-30kg (normally female are less weight and height). Common color of German Shepherd is black and yellow-brown or red-brown. Next abundant color is black. And there can be seen with sable color (unclear brown, black and ash mixed). In the small age their ears are sagging but when they grow they will go straight.

German Shepherd loves his family and protect them as much as he can. They love children very much. German Shepherd is easy to control. They work only under the orders of their masters. German Shepherd is the 3rd intelligent dog in the world. They can make self decisions and work on it. Therefore they have to be trained from their small age. German Shepherds do not like arriving of other persons to his home. If so they react very aggressively and may bite the guest.

They have some characteristic diseases which are known as hip and elbow dysplasia, blood disorders, chronic eczema, keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) and flea allergies. Therefore they have to be treated with medicines and vaccines at right time from the beginning. Specially they could be damaged by ticks and fleas.
